Christ the King Sunday

Today, the Church celebrates the Kingship of Jesus Christ. He is not only the Savior of the Universe, but also the King of the Universe! As the long awaited for Messiah, Christ is also the one true king that the Jewish people longed to follow. As we see from an excerpt from the book of Deuteronomy:

“one like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven;
 when he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him,
the one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship;
 all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.”

As people of 20th and 21st Century America, the notion of a king may seem foreign to us. We see them in movies, and read about them in books, but we have very little personal experience of being under a kingship. But to Christ, we are his people, and He is our King that gives us the rules and regulations by which we are supposed to live. He though, in difference to earthly kings, does so not for His own benefit and growth, but for our own. So today, may we echo the words spoken in the Cristeros wars of the early 20th century and may we acclaim “Viva Cristo Rey!” “Long Live Christ the King!”
